Office Depot reported Wednesday that its first-quarter sales fell 2% to $2.8 billion, due to losses within its CompuCom and retail divisions.

CompuCom provides IT and consulting services to businesses, while the retail divison encompasses the company's Office Depot and OfficeMax stores.

In announcing the earnings results, Office Depot CEO Gerald Smith said the company is taking "decisive actions" to put its business "back on target with its long-term expectations."

One of those actions involved closing stores.

Office Depot plans to close 50 stores this year under both its namesake and OfficeMax banners, the company told Business Insider in late April.

Several of the closing stores will shut down permanently on May 18, according to Shera Bishop, a spokeswoman for Office Depot.

She said the closings are part of a three-year plan announced in 2016 to shutter roughly 300 stores.

"Office Depot, Inc. continues to optimize its retail footprint as part of the three-year strategic plan announced in August 2016," Bishop said. "We will continue to serve our customers at neighboring Office Depot and OfficeMax stores as well as online at officedepot.com."
