Another Covid-19 case in French Polynesia as restrictions eased

Another person in French Polynesia has tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the tally to 58.

The latest case came after six days without any detected infection.

At the weekend, the health minister Jacques Raynal said test results showed the circulation of the the virus had been stopped.

Meanwhile, the lockdown restrictions imposed last month will be eased from the day after tomorrow on Tahiti and Moorea after some had already been relaxed in the outer islands.

The president Edouard Fritch and the French High Commissioner Dominique Sorain outlined the new parameters which will be in place until 13 May.

The nightly curfew will be shortened by one hour to between 9pm and 5am.

Large public meetings as well as sporting events remain banned but church services with no more than 50 people and funerals with no more than 20 people will be allowed to go ahead.

Schools will remain closed but can gradually open from 18 May while child care centres can open on 29 April.

Shops will be able to reopen but social distancing will have to observed while limits on the sale of alcohol will still apply.

Inter-island travel won't be allowed but outer island residents stranded in Tahiti will get clearance to return home if they test negative for the virus.
