Easy to see where you get your writing talent. I find the older the writing, the more complex ideas and higher vocabulary are evident. I think of Mark Twain's writings in this regard.

Wonderful article. Can humans ever find enough sacredness to overcome the greed of human nature? We make laws to protect our wilderness areas and then people violate those laws because they don’t want anyone telling them what to do. Fines and jail time don’t seem to work. Maybe if they had to repair the damage done by their Off Road Vehicle or pick up trash along a road or in a campsite they would learn more appreciation for the scared area they disrespected. We went on camping trips because as a family of seven that is what we could afford. We cleaned up our campsite and those next to us if needed. We grumbled about the extra but Dad was adamant about leaving a pristine site. We would not have dared to throw anything out the car window because he would have stopped and we would have had to walk back and pick up that trash and whatever else was there. I saw that wisdom as an adult and raised my 2 daughters the same. I carry a trash sack in my car.

WOW! What a beautiful letter - and unfortunately not much has changed for the better since your father wrote it. He really captured the spirit of the place and the loss of or lack of sacredness by White people.

On another note, the US District Court in NM released the consent decree between NM/Navajo Nation and the Gold King Mine owners. I sure hope that somehow $10mm is able to adequately compensate the Navajo from that mine spill. It always feels weird and mismatched to offer millions of dollars for environmental damage. You need the damage to be un-done if it's even possible. The consent decree says nothing about cleaning up the site.
