I love old New York. The classic old style restaurants that created the New York mystique.
This is one. Owned by the same family for over 40 years.
Long skinny joint that starts with a long bar then checkered tile into the dining room.
Thursday is my favorite day - corned beef and cabbage! -

I stopped in here a few weeks ago and had a great meal and a glass of wine. Old school, UES.

You cannot go wrong here. Hearty old- school fare in a charmingly classic setting that still reminds you of the New York and New Yorkers that you originally came here for. No pretense, no socially conscious trendistic food art served on self-composting plates that turn into biosphere homes for remote civilizations. Check your attitude on the sidewalk. Bring your appetite and thirst. Food is great, owner and staff are lovely and bar denizens and flies are most entertaining. What more could you want out of life ..

I don't know what Donohue's has such mediocre reviews and a few untruths to boot. After reading some reviews that stated you need reservations, I looked on open table and saw that Donohue's isn't listed there. I googled it, and no where does it say reservations are accepted, although maybe I could have just called and they would have taken them over the phone. We threw caution to the wind and showed up at 8pm on Friday night, and there were a couple of tables available-we were given a booth without asking (of course we wanted the booth). This place is neither a dive or full of old people. It has a diverse crowd, young and old, some people were alone and looked like regulars and some were in groups. The staff was very pleasant, we didn't have to wait long to place our order and our food was out very quickly. (Btw, the reviews in the Wall St Journal are way better).
The Food: we ordered simply-We both had the French Onion, which was on par with Balthazar's-it was quite good. I ordered the burger and my companion ordered the turkey club. I would feel comfortable ordering the fish or the steak, but felt like a burger. We loved our food dishes. If your looking for an old school NYC low-key restaurant, this is the place for you. It's been there 50 years or so, so they must be doing something right. -

Donohue's does old school right! Come here if you want to take in Old New York and experience solid service, good food and great cocktails. Prices are what is to be expected in NYC - real estate is profoundly expensive. I am amazed that these establishments can continue to serve great solid meals at this price-point. Thank you Donohue's we thoroughly enjoyed the service, drinks, steak and seafood!
