Building a company means you wear all the hats. But those hats come with blinders - especially when it comes to Marketing and Growth. The worst thing a founder can do is think “crap, I need someone that runs ads or does SEO or <insert channel here>” before they understand whether: 1️⃣ - They have a clear understanding of why this role is important, why this channel is important, and what this person is expected to do and deliver. 2️⃣ - Have the fundamental support infrastructure to handle the new hire and set them up for success. I’ve advised more founders than I care to mention that made this mistake early on, hired a subject-matter expert without themselves having an understanding of why they need them, and then everyone parts ways in 6 months due to complete misalignment in expectations. That’s why I love advising and consulting in addition to my full-time roles.
