Palmetto Championship odds, predictions and PGA Tour picks

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

With just one week to go until the 2021 US Open, Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka front a weak field at Congaree Golf Club in Ridgeland, South Carolina, this week for the Palmetto Championship. Below, we look at the 2021 Palmetto Championship odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions to win.

This tournament is replacing the RBC Canadian Open on the PGA Tour schedule. The Canadian Open was canceled for the second straight year due to travel restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be the first tournament held at the 7,655-yard, par-71 Congaree GC.

The Palmetto Championship follows up an eventful week at the Memorial Tournament as the final tune-up for the US Open. Patrick Cantlay defeated Collin Morikawa in a playoff last week after 54-hole leader Jon Rahm was forced to withdraw due to a positive COVID-19 test.

Keith Mitchell (+4500)

The weak pre-major field and first-time PGA Tour venue for the Palmetto Championship could make for a profitable week for bettors. Johnson is the top player in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings at No. 7. Only three others from the top 25 are at Congaree GC this week.

Mitchell has just one PGA Tour title to his name (2019 Honda Classic), but he recently made a bid for his second with a T-3 result at the Wells Fargo Championship. He followed it up with a T-26 at the AT&T Byron Nelson and a missed cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge, but this is a considerably weaker field than both of those events.

Mitchell is averaging 0.46 Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee per round for the 2020-21 season and should be well-suited to the long course. Both Congaree and PGA National, where Mitchell won the Honda Classic, were designed by Tom Fazio.

2021 Palmetto Championship picks – Contender

Luke List (+8000)

List is another long-hitter who has flashed strong recent form. He’s averaging 0.60 SG: Off-the-Tee and 0.80 SG: Tee-to-Green for the season and tied for sixth at the Wells Fargo Championship ahead of a T-61 at the AT&T Byron Nelson and missed cuts at the Charles Schwab Challenge and the Memorial Tournament.

He has two top-10 finishes in 2021 with the other at Torrey Pines for the Farmers Insurance Open in January. The 36-year-old has never won on the PGA Tour, but he tied for second at the 2018 Honda Classic as his top finish to date. He has two wins on the Korn Ferry Tour.

2021 Palmetto Championship picks – Long shot

Andrew Putnam (+15000)

We’ll go a different direction with our long-shot selection at the new PGA Tour venue. Putnam is averaging 0.48 SG: Putting and 0.18 SG: Around-the-Green per round this season while losing 0.63 strokes per round off-the-tee.

Has been struggling mightily of late with six missed cuts in his last seven events, but he has three top-10 finishes on the year. A $100 bet at +15000 odds would return a profit of $15,000.
