A prominent lawyer has accused the Open University of “Stalinism” after it removed a comment he made about transgender women.

Alistair Bonnington, 68, a former legal adviser to the BBC, posted a contribution about proposed hate crime laws in Scotland on an online forum operated by the university.

Mr Bonnington, a student of English literature at the OU, argued that the bill would “make it a crime for anybody to deny that a ‘trans’ woman (ie a man) was a real woman”.

He added: “It looks like feminists in Scotland can look forward to incarceration.”
