A Course in Meditation: A 21-Day Workout for Your Consciousness

Rate this book
A 21-day course for modern meditators

It can be difficult for the hyperactive 21st century mind to relax into an experience of silence and awareness. Recognizing this, the revered mystic Osho developed new meditation techniques to address the challenges of the modern mind. A Course in Meditation demonstrates these techniques in an easy-to-navigate format. Each day, learn a new aspect of meditative living followed by a simple, practical meditation and awareness practice. After each experience, reflect on the accompanying quote of the day, or use the provided space to take notes. Throughout the course, Osho imparts his unique insights on love, anger, relaxation, and more to guide you toward a space of inner acceptance, joy and mindfulness.

A Course in Meditation shows how we can reclaim the meditative nature that we each come in to the world with, but lose over time as we are initiated into the ways of society. From beginners eager to find stillness to more experienced meditators who wish to elevate their practice, Osho’s guide to meditation can teach everyone to separate themselves from their minds for a transformation of consciousness that brings a new understanding of what it means to be alert and responsive to whatever life brings.

“Without meditation you do not know the secrets of life, you know only the surface of life.”
-OSHO

Osho , known for his revolutionary contribution to the science of inner transformation, continues to inspire millions of people worldwide in their search to define a new approach to individual spirituality that is self-directed and responsive to the everyday challenges of contemporary life. Osho was described by UK's Sunday Times as one of the "1000 Makers of the 20th Century." His internationally bestselling works are available in 60 languages around the world.

Rajneesh (born Chandra Mohan Jain, 11 December 1931 – 19 January 1990) and latter rebranded as Osho was leader of the Rajneesh movement. During his lifetime he was viewed as a controversial new religious movement leader and mystic.

In the 1960s he traveled throughout India as a public speaker and was a vocal critic of socialism, Mahatma Gandhi, and Hindu religious orthodoxy.

Rajneesh emphasized the importance of meditation, mindfulness, love, celebration, courage, creativity and humor—qualities that he viewed as being suppressed by adherence to static belief systems, religious tradition and socialization.

In advocating a more open attitude to human sexuality he caused controversy in India during the late 1960s and became known as "the sex guru".

In 1970, Rajneesh spent time in Mumbai initiating followers known as "neo-sannyasins". During this period he expanded his spiritual teachings and commented extensively in discourses on the writings of religious traditions, mystics, and philosophers from around the world. In 1974 Rajneesh relocated to Pune, where an ashram was established and a variety of therapies, incorporating methods first developed by the Human Potential Movement, were offered to a growing Western following. By the late 1970s, the tension between the ruling Janata Party government of Morarji Desai and the movement led to a curbing of the ashram's development and a back taxes claim estimated at $5 million.

In 1981, the Rajneesh movement's efforts refocused on activities in the United States and Rajneesh relocated to a facility known as Rajneeshpuram in Wasco County, Oregon. Almost immediately the movement ran into conflict with county residents and the state government, and a succession of legal battles concerning the ashram's construction and continued development curtailed its success.

In 1985, in the wake of a series of serious crimes by his followers, including a mass food poisoning attack with Salmonella bacteria and an aborted assassination plot to murder U.S. Attorney Charles H. Turner, Rajneesh alleged that his personal secretary Ma Anand Sheela and her close supporters had been responsible. He was later deported from the United States in accordance with an Alford plea bargain.[

After his deportation, 21 countries denied him entry. He ultimately returned to India and a revived Pune ashram, where he died in 1990. Rajneesh's ashram, now known as OSHO International Meditation Resort and all associated intellectual property, is managed by the Zurich registered Osho International Foundation (formerly Rajneesh International Foundation). Rajneesh's teachings have had a notable impact on Western New Age thought, and their popularity has increased markedly since his death.

I received a complimentary ARC copy of A Course in Meditation:
A 21-Day Workout for Your Consciousness by Osho from NetGalley and Crown Publishing/Harmony in order to read and give an honest review.

"...well-written, user-friendly and Osho's experience and wisdom shines through..."

Whether you're experienced in meditation or new to the practice, A Course in Meditation: A 21-Day Workout for Your Consciousness by Osho is a great book for everyone.

I gravitated towards meditation when I was facing health issues and found it so beneficial but sadly over the spring, I hadn't been as consistent. I have to admit "A Course in Meditation", a twenty-one-day course, really helped me get back on track and I am happy to say I am now back to a daily practice.

Each day the book tackles a subject whether it is relating, balance, anger or maturity, just to name a few, you get Osho's insights, meditations and techniques to help you put the concepts into practice, and each day finishes with a quote to keep you inspired all day.

This is a book I would highly recommend, it's well-written, user-friendly and Osho's experience and wisdom shines through! A must-have for all those who would like to have more balance in their lives and enhance their well-being.

Osho had really understood what existence was all about, experiencing and living to the fullest while observing the experience itself. I loved every single meditation and the breath work can have an amazing impact on the mood and on the internal waves and frequencies, which just seem to alter or disappear once you try it!

A good guide to meditation, simple enough for beginners and comprehensive enough for more experienced meditators. Each daily lesson covers a different subject with an accompanying quote, and examples of how to apply the techniques learned to daily life. Very user-friendly and easy to follow.

Thanks to the publisher for an ARC to read and give my honest opinion.

There is nothing quite like an Osho reading experience as he takes us on a 21 day journey in meditation. So many quotes and scriptures in this book just speak to you. It’s just unbelievable how the book tugs on your psyche and heart strings. I like how this book can really be for anyone. Meditation is a step in mindfulness as they feed each other.

What did I like? The mindfulness part of meditation will always be my favorite since it seems like no one communicates well any more. We spend so much time on our phones trying to not make eye contact hurrying to our next place. Book centers on a lot of things that should garner our attention like how not to judge others.

Would I buy this book? This guy has been coined the most dangerous man since Jesus... his books, his writings, just make sense. Yes, I have bought and will continue to buy.

Thanks for the copy...amazing writing.

This book was alright. It is not transcripts of Osho’s discourses but more like summations of what he said. Two better books on the topic by Osho are The Book of Secrets, over a thousand pages of incredible depth, and, Mediation: The First and Last Freedom.
I’m not criticizing the book as it is decently written but very very short with a lot of blank pages between chapters. I also think it is falsely advertised with Osho’s name being used with someone else’s writing on what he said.

I would recommend this as an audiobook instead of hardcover so that the meditations could be implemented much easier.

Not bad at all. Listening to osho (audiobook) is better than the exercises mentioned in the book.

Whether you're new to meditation, getting back into it, or a long-time practitioner OSHO's Course in Meditation can provide a great guide to strengthen and renew your practice.
The book is filled with practical options to apply, and recognizes that what works for one person may not be the best option for you.
This book makes meditation accessible and has things on a number of topics that the reader may find called to explore, and spending a few minutes a day for 21 days can be transformative for those interested in meditating.
Many thanks to Crown Publishing and NetGalley for the advance copy.

I've been trying to get into a daily mediation practice for almost a year. I have never been able to stick with it for longer than a week or so at a time... until I read this book. The daily chapters are quite short, making it easy to fit in every day, and I personally accompanied each reading with a short journal entry. Every chapter includes a meditation, some of which require time set aside, but many can be done during your everyday tasks. This book was very approachable as a relative beginner, and gave me a LOT to think about, hinting at ideas that sparked my own thoughts in journal entries. By far the most engaging and useful self-help type book I've read.

There are couple of meditation techniques which feel like repetitions. There are a few which are divided in stages and will take a long time to move to the next stage. Though that's amazing, my idea before picking the book was that 21 meditations will be there for each day which will be self-sufficient.

I read the book, however, to know more about Osho's views on Meditations. Osho's Insights, which precedes each meditation technique are the best parts of the book, not the meditations. That is my opinion.

Overall I enjoyed reading the book for the different meditations. I didn't read it in 21 days, I did a condensed reading and noted down meditations that worked with me. One of my favourites is the meditation where you smile from within.

3 stars because of my experiences with other Osho books and the harsh emphasis on gender norms and the heteronormativity expressed. This book had recommend readings for each day that included Osho's book on love that I read previously and have a lot of issues with.

Eat, drink and merry , then repeat. The intelligent person would as what’s the point of such life. It’s stagnant and repetitive. All we have is this moment, improve it’s quality and be hyperaware, hyper alert and slow- so you rejoice the taste of this moment with you working to improve it’s quality and in the process become creative and experience joy. Happiness comes from outside - things and people- it makes you dependent and conditional- as we feel bereft when they leave us . But joy, experienced as a creative process is calm, silent and pure bliss- unconditional.

Really liked this book! Read a chapter a day, and took away some good ideas and concepts. Going to buy a copy for my reference (i.e. I had a library copy).

Osho is one of those voices you dont realize you need to hear until you hear it. It is like being given a glass of water after only having access to koolaid for years

This was a really nice synthesis of Osho's teachings and a neat combination of his own talks and some filler. Would recommend as an introduction, but not necessarily if you're already familiar.

After the 10th day, I thought the exercises were repetitive or inefficient, but each section was special in itself, so I found it useful.
