Position Description

The Institute for Market Transformation (IMT) is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization on a mission to equitably decarbonize buildings in this decade to improve the livability of our communities. Our partnerships with local communities, government leaders, and businesses provide unique insights into how to make this vision a reality. 

IMT is seeking a Director of Finance and Compliance to join our dynamic Operations team. They will oversee all aspects of financial management, ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, and be responsible for IMT’s strong financial standing. They will work collaboratively with the senior leadership team, development team, and program staff leads in budgeting and financial reporting. The Director will have expertise in non-profit accounting and compliance, excellent communications skills, and strong analytical skills. 

This position is part of IMT’s senior leadership team and reports to the Chief Operating Officer. The Director will supervise the Senior Accounting Manager. 

Responsibilities

  • Financial management and budgeting: 
    • Develop and maintain financial strategies and models to support strategic initiatives and strong, organization-wide financial standing.
    • Prepare digestible annual and multi-year budgets and forecasts, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
    • Analyze financial performance and provide insights to senior leadership for effective decision-making.
    • Set and monitor key financial metrics and implement corrective actions as needed.
    • Oversee cash, investment and asset management. Lead cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds as needed.
    • Collaborate with development team to ensure alignment between financial goals and fundraising initiatives. 
    • Maintain up-to-date budget templates and other internal financial and budgeting tools. Provide guidance and training to program staff on developing project budgets and perform final review of all budgets for accuracy. 
    • Maintain electronic documents such as final project budgets, contracts, financial reports, and other related financial records.
    • Supervise and work closely with the Senior Accounting Manager to:
      • Coordinate with external auditors on the annual audit process and ensure compliance with audit requirements.
      • Oversee the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
      • Review and approve payroll, bank reconciliations and credit card reconciliations.
      • Provide back-up support for monthly payroll processing.
      • Maintain and execute invoicing process.
  • Financial reporting
    • Lead IMT’s board audit committee and provide monthly financial reports to IMT’s board finance committee. 
    • Prepare financial reports for management, funders and other stakeholders.
  • Compliance and contract management
    • Responsible for review of all contracts before CEO signature, and interaction with external legal team as needed.
    • Ensure IMT’s compliance as a 501c3 organization and maintain related certifications, registrations, and status.
    • Set internal policies and processes regarding contract management, budgeting, and fundraising compliance. Train staff on policies and processes.
    • Support senior leadership team, program leads, and development team on understanding external agency requirements including local, state, and federal government RFPs, awards, and contracts.

Qualifications and Skills

  • 7+ years of experience in a relevant role to include experience working for a nonprofit organization
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field; CPA preferred
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit financial principles, regulations, and accounting standards
  • Experience with diverse revenue streams, including grants management and fundraising
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to translate financial data into actionable insights
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities with a track record of working collaboratively across teams
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in Excel and QuickBooks. Experience with Salesforce a plus

Position Description

IMT seeks a Chief Program Officer with experience across the full range of stakeholders and subject matter we engage to advance our mission.  The Chief Program Officer (CPO) will oversee all programmatic work and manage each of IMT’s program teams, including Community Engagement, Policy and Regulatory Engagement, and Business Engagement. The CPO will work collaboratively with the senior leadership team and the program staff to execute an ambitious organizational strategy. They will ensure that IMT is delivering effective work, informed by the multitude of stakeholders in the field of equitable building decarbonization. They will set expectations and milestones for IMT program positioning and monitor progress against our organizational strategic goals. 

The position reports to the Chief Executive Officer, and is part of IMT’s Executive Management Team.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership (30%)
    • With senior management, develop, update, and execute organizational strategy—setting the programmatic pathway for IMT’s goals of facilitating community-led decarbonization solutions; broad adoption of building performance programs and policies at the city, state, and federal levels; advancing new code, utility, and regulatory models that center investments in people and that improve the health and wellbeing of citizens; and using IMT’s expertise and influence to bring about change in real estate and other business operations to embody commitments to equity and the environment
    • Continually evaluate and pursue opportunities to partner with other organizations. Identify new partnerships built on mutual respect and reciprocity – where IMT can use its influence and opportunity to advance the interests of partner organizations
    • Track progress against long-term trends through oversight of social and market transformation indicators and quarterly progress against organizational goals
    • Set and communicate strategies and goals around diversity, equity, and inclusion across all programming
  • Representation and Stakeholder Engagement (25%)
    • Set expectations for IMT positioning through project plans, in coordination with leadership team and Communications and Development staff.
    • Represent IMT with key stakeholders including policymakers, elected officials, business leaders, reporters, and funders
    • Serve as a national thought leader on policy development and mechanisms needed to achieve widespread and equitable access to high-performing buildings
    • Develop strategies and plans for collaborating with partner organizations that advance IMT’s mission and improve the organization’s reach and effectiveness 
  • Staff Management and Program Delivery (30%)
    • Directly supervise four Directors overseeing program activities (Directors of Community Engagement, Policy, Regulatory, and Business Engagement) and provide strategic direction that supports their leadership of respective programs and other work
    • Work with Human Resources to ensure professional development opportunities are ample and encouraged, and that they align both with staff’s ambitions and with the organization’s strategy 
    • As the party ultimately accountable for the successful delivery of IMT’s program work, coach and mentor staff to provide the guidance they need to provide excellent client service
    • Accountable for team’s timely work plan deliverables
  • Development, Fundraising, and Reporting (15%)
    • Set programmatic development and fundraising targets, summarizing outcomes, milestones, and activities in alignment with IMT’s organizational strategy. Communicate with funders about IMT’s impact, including through grant writing, funder reports, and identification/assessment of new funding opportunities. 
    • Support and maintain relationships with funders and donors

Position Description

Responsibilities

  • Policy development, compliance, and reporting:
    • Develop and implement HR policies and procedures to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
    • Stay informed about best practices in HR and make recommendations for continuous improvement that best supports our staff and strategic goals.
    • Prepare regular reports on metrics and progress towards relevant goals and outcomes.
  • Recruitment and retention:
    • Develop and manage inclusive recruitment strategies and processes, including sourcing candidates to ensure diverse candidate pools, conducting interviews, and making hiring decisions in collaboration with hiring managers.
    • Implement best practices for attracting and retaining talent.
    • Facilitate the onboarding process for new hires, ensuring they have the necessary tools and information to be successful in their roles. 
    • Support the design and delivery of training programs for staff to foster awareness, understanding, and skills that are core to our work.
  • Employee engagement: 
    • Implement initiatives to promote a positive and inclusive work culture, including employee resource groups, affinity networks, and opportunities for open dialogue and feedback. 
    • Coordinate and support team gatherings including IMT’s annual retreat. 
    • Coordinate IMT Board and Committee meetings. 
  • Performance management: 
    • Lead the coordination of the goal-setting and performance evaluation process with staff members, working closely with their direct supervisors. 
    • Provide guidance and support to staff on HR-related issues, including performance management, disciplinary actions, and conflict resolution.
  • Hybrid/remote work-place management:
    • Make recommendations for continuous improvement related to hybrid workforce management.
    • Oversee IT/CRM systems and vendors, and provide recommendations on internal infrastructure/IT needs. Ensure staff is trained on IT/CRM systems. 
    • Coordinate the purchasing and distribution of IMT equipment to new staff and the returning of equipment from staff in transition. 
    • Order and maintain office supplies.
    • Serve as point of contact for building management.
    • Coordinate workplace needs to include in-person space for meetings.
  • Manage staff benefits programs, including health insurance, retirement plans, and other employee perks.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date staff records and HR systems.
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

  • At least 5 years of experience in human resources, organizational development or a relevant role; 
  • Deep understanding of DEI concepts, issues, and best practices, with demonstrated experience supporting DEI initiatives in a nonprofit or similar setting;

Position Description

The Institute for Market Transformation (IMT) is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization on a mission to equitably decarbonize buildings in this decade to improve the livability of our communities. We are seeking a Director of Business Engagement who will be responsible for managing IMT’s Building Performance Partnership (BPP) program that works to help establish and support a network of building innovation hubs that deliver policy compliance support and innovative leadership practices to real estate stakeholders in jurisdictions across the country pursuing Building Performance Standards and aggressive decarbonization goals. 

The Director will lead the strategic direction and day to day execution, in conjunction with our project partner for the Building Performance Partnership (BPP), and support the strategic direction of all hub related and programmatic Business Engagement work. The Director will have direct working knowledge of the real estate industry and will represent IMT externally to engage with stakeholders. These include but are not limited to nonprofits, building owners, operators, tenants, lenders, investors, attorneys, energy service providers, city government representatives, and community stakeholders. This position reports to the Senior Director of Business Engagement and will work collaboratively across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, implementation and growth of the BPP program and hub network.
  • Contribute to fundraising strategy for BPP and related programs.
  • Collaborate and coordinate deliverables with project partner(s) including proposal writing, resource creation and adaptation, service offerings, community engagement, fundraising, and other activities as needed.
  • Support capacity building in and around the buildings sector, including through leading the project development and delivery of training for lenders, owners, community organizations, contractors, and other relevant key stakeholders. 
  • Contribute subject matter expertise to the development of forward-thinking solutions that accelerate demand for efficiency through high-performance building construction and operations, leasing, technologies, financing mechanisms, diverse suppliers, and workforce development strategies.
  • Synthesize and publicly present thought-leading ideas through public presentations, written resources, publishable articles, and/or blogs. 
  • Work collaboratively with IMT’s Public Sector, Community Engagement, and Power Sector teams to identify and facilitate ways that local governments and utilities can partner with, incentivize, and motivate the private sector to decarbonize buildings.
  • Build relationships and facilitate public-private partnership opportunities with companies, nonprofits, and government agencies to develop energy-saving strategies through market- and policy-based mechanisms.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Undergraduate and/ or graduate degree in real estate, finance, sustainability management, business, or related field preferred.
  • Ten or more years’ experience in commercial real estate, real estate lending, energy services, ESG, management consulting, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with and/or demonstrated interest in real estate finance and underwriting or community development finance.
  • Experience managing and developing staff directly.
  • Commitment to advancing social and environmental justice.
  • Ability to convene internal and external stakeholders from disparate fields to build consensus around programs related to building and climate policy.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multiple projects and external partners simultaneously and manage complex workflows.
  • Demonstration of project management that includes diligent project planning, proactive budgeting, creative execution, and a commitment to continuous improvement. 
  • Skilled communicator with a professional demeanor who can develop and present material with confidence, and can read the interest of the audience and pivot presentation tactics accordingly. 
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to inform organizational decisions and activities.
  • Ability to build relationships and work with a variety of stakeholders including local government representatives, other nonprofits, building owners and operators, policy-makers, finance professionals, and other industry professionals.
  • Experience developing trainings for the buildings sector a plus.
