Troy Eaton convicted in 2018 killing of state trooper in Tippah County

A murder case ongoing since 2018 came to a conclusion over the weekend.

Troy Anthony Eaton was convicted of 2nd degree murder and aggravated assault in a widely watched case about the killing of state troopper Josh Smith. He was also convcited of injuring Ricky Dale Vick.

The preliminary hearing for this case was in November of 2018.

The Tippah County Circuit Court jury was selected last week. The prosection presented their case and rested by Thursday. The defense spent Friday and Saturday presenting their case.

The verdict was returned Saturday evening.

Originally, Eaton was facing a capital murder charge in the case which would have carried the death penalty. Eaton admitted to the shooting but claimed it was in self defense

As it stands, Judge Kelly Luther will sentence Eaton on on October 8th.
