On April 1st, 2024, I embarked on a new adventure in my life. Together with my partner and dog, we left everything behind in the Netherlands and set out in a camper across Europe. In this blog I share a glimpse into the parallel journeys of personal transformation and organizational evolution of Disrupt Development. As a storm rages outside our camper docked in an Italian harbor, I'm reading a book of philosopher Ervin Laszlo who proposes that the purpose of life and the universe itself is development and evolution. I think about the constant motion and evolution that defines my life, this new adventure, and start to write down my thoughts. I see these elements of change and development reflected in Disrupt Development as well. The organization I founded is itself a manifestation of the desire for growth and evolution within the structures of our society. Like the storm that clears the sky for a new day, we aim to break through old paradigms and make room for new, more equitable and sustainable systems for all life on planet. Just as in my personal quest, Disrupt Development has reached a point of transition, and we are preparing for the next flourishing phase. We are on the verge of starting a new chapter with the establishment of a new global secretariat, with five permanent staff members, which will serve as the backbone of our efforts. A renewed governance structure will give us the flexibility to move in a world that is constantly changing. We are in the process of strengthening our financial diversity, which is essential for the sustainability of our purpose. Finally, we will soon begin to renew our community, where proactivity and co-creation will be fundamental for the flourishing of our movement. For Disrupt Development, and for me, the path of evolution will undoubtedly lead to new horizons and growth.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 - 𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐨 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 🌿 The last 1.5 year have been a true discovery into the unknown, letting go of all types of comfort zones that gave me the illusion of safety; a relationship that was not aligned anymore, but still stayed, a way of life that was not purely authentic to me, but still choose living that path as long as I could, taking on work gigs that were paying good enough, but was not in line with what I envisioned if I would have followed my boldest dreams. Due to a number of “coincidences” (as we call them, but they never are) all of these so called comforting structures lost its ground and the figurative rug was pulled away under my feet. I had suddenly nowhere to go, nothing to do and nothing to find. And that was exactly what was needed in order to propel me forward to where I was meant to be (for now that is). After spending a month on the land of one of my best friends Carlijn Nelissen from ON.PURPOSE STUDIO in Portugal, I was disconnected from wifi, 4g, and all “normal” comforts. I became grounded again in… well… me! The almost forced connection to nature and the forced disconnection from ‘the grid’ was a completely transformative experience, and only later realized what the impact was it had on me. Thanks to her, my path has led me to move to Portugal. Where the lands felt free, undiscovered, raw, rough, connected and to nature in ways that I missed all my life, but never realized until it happened. Now, fast forwarded into the now; I'm so grateful for the freedom seekers that have paved the way like Carlijn Nelissen, showing that an entrepreneurial life is possible executed from a completely different perspective. In alignment with nature and taking life much more slowly than we’re programmed to from a young age. Since living here off grid now for 1.5 year on my land, I have met so many people with similar stories. Almost all people I have met here have “fled” the rat race, to live a more pure and free life, with a lower cost of living, however, still very much have the desire to be of value to society in a much more organic and natural way. So this is a little Monday morning motivation, for all the freedom seekers. There are other ways to go about it, discover what it is that you seek. What is it that you're chasing and what really means success to you? To me the greatest measurement of success is: free time. We only have a limited amount of it and can't be regained once it’s spent. For those who missed the podcast I recorded with Carlien Cavens from Unplug48, see below. Why do so many neurodivergent adults thrive as freelancers and entrepreneurs, while they struggle in traditional work settings? 🧠 One of the first to research the relationship between entrepreneurship and neurodiversity - more specifically ADHD - is Ingrid Verheul, associate professor at the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. Last week I had the pleasure of giving a keynote on neurodiversity alongside Ingrid at the Corporate Venturing & Entrepreneurship Summit in Rotterdam. Here is what I learned from Ingrid about the link between ADHD and entrepreneurship - and why we both believe in the value of ‘blended talent’: 💡 How someone with ADHD may struggle in a traditional work setting Why have endless meetings when one can just act? For many individuals with ADHD, the conventional structures and processes of traditional workplaces can seem stifling and counterproductive. With a brain that is interest- and novelty-driven, they may find it challenging to conform to the sort of rigid schedules, pointless politics, and bureaucratic rigmarole that dominate traditional workplaces. Some find a way to turn their unconventional thinking into a strength at work. But all too often, individuals with ADHD feel misunderstood in work settings that prioritize conformity and consistency over flexibility and risk-taking. 💡 Why entrepreneurship aligns well with common ADHD strengths While every individual with ADHD is different, their ‘shortcomings’ in traditional work settings can be their strengths in entrepreneurial roles. Novelty-seeking. Risk-taking. The ability to improvize. All of these can be powerful entrepreneurial skills, especially in the early stages of building a new business or venture. In her research, Ingrid and her peers have found a positive association between hyperactivity and entrepreneurial orientation - and more specifically, with its proactive and risk-taking aspects. 💡 Why it is important not to romanticize ADHD entrepreneurship The life of an ADHD entrepreneur is not all sunshine and roses. And success is not guaranteed. As Ingrid points out in her work, success in entrepreneurship for people with ADHD depends on the right circumstances - such as having a supportive partner or business partner, and a degree of symptom severity that allows for the strengths of ADHD to shine without being overshadowed by its challenges. Entrepreneurs with ADHD may also struggle as they become successful and more managerial qualities are needed to structure, scale, and sustain their business. That’s why building entrepreneurial teams with complementary qualities - or what Ingrid calls ‘blended talent’ - is so important. It’s a lesson that corporates could take to heart as well: Rather than expecting every brain to be able to “do it all”, how much more impactful would teams be if we consciously designed them with complementary qualities in mind? #Neurodiversity #ADHD Photo (by Maurice de Rochemont): Ingrid Verheul and me.

One of the top things that make entrepreneurship hard is when you lack a community of people who are all in the same boat. So, after years of working from cafe's, flex- and home office, Buster Franken and I deemed it the right time to take matter into our own hands and create a community of startup founders in Utrecht. Instead of an anonymous flex office or a co-working space, we want it to be a tight-knit group of people working seriously on their (impact) startups. Aside from work, there's also the important things that bring us together like shared lunches, drinks, community events and work-out sessions. Which political party says something about the future of (#freelance) work in Flanders? In the run-up to the elections of June 9, 2024, NextConomy asked each party 5 questions and examined their positions. I particularly looked at the following question: The number of freelancers in our country is increasing every year. What measures does your party want to take to further facilitate the change of status, employee/self-employed and vice versa, regarding social security, administration, ...? Answers (excerpt from the report, translated into English) ''There is a great consensus in principle here: CD&V, Groen, Open VLD, NV-A and Vlaams Belang argue in different terms for further social and fiscal harmonization, a unification of the statutes of civil servant, employee and self-employed person, especially with regard to pension rights. That would also make the flow or transfer easier. It would also generate savings for the government. PvdA proposes measures to better protect the self-employed in terms of compensation for illness and unemployment. But the self-employed with higher incomes should contribute more. Vooruit views freelancers as a precarious group that needs extra social protection and even advocates a form of trade unionization for those who are highly dependent on clients. Vooruit also continues to fight against false self-employment.'' Even more interesting insights in the paper, but the question remains: Do these parties talk bout freelancers and self-employed in what we understand under this definition, or again we are merged into cohorts of bakeries, farmers and fisheries, which are self-employed as well? For something that doesn't exist, the future has a profound affect on what we do in the present, as Loes Damhof explains brilliantly in this TED Talk: https://lnkd.in/eG2M7WY6 If we become too attached to one or two scenarios it limits our sense of agency - as the future can only ever be imagined. Stay with that for a minute or two... the implications of well and truly assimilating that into our being are mind-blowing! I'm in the midst or preparing to go back to Hawkwood today, I'm going to spend the next few days with Loes and Alex Lambie on the Emergence Academy to learn more about Futures Literacy. We'll be exploring our innate capacity to sense (as opposed to make-sense) of the world around us, and really unpack and appreciate: what we 'see' is actually how we see. 5 years ago I moved to Stroud, I was at the end of one imagined future, where practicing corporate sustainability wasn't realising the kind of change I had been sold. I was living someone else's future. I went to the Seed Festival, at Hawkwood, drawn to its name as the Centre for Future Thinking and connected with the team at Stop Ecocide International. From here, I supported the campaign for a few years, then continued my unlearning journey as a fellow with The Bio-Leadership Project. And at the beginning of this month, I spent an incredible week with Change in Nature practicing nature facilitation (more here: https://lnkd.in/eAU2Nkim). I had no idea where this path was headed. I just had this feeling deep down to move closer to the trees and find communities who wanted to learn and grow with, in and for nature. I hadn't realised, at the time, the biggest change I'd made was imagining a different future. There are more changes afoot and many different futures I keep trying to imagine. As Loes says: It’s not about what we do today that shapes the future, it’s how we look at the future that shapes the present. More to come from the Emergence Academy as we play with different futures and explore unknown territories to help us see the present differently and feel into what matters most... 🌳 🦋 🕸 ❤️ 🌱
